 What is Oolong Tea?

There are many different types of tea produced from the leaves  and leaf buds of the Camellia Sinesis or tea bush. Oolong Tea Stockists get their supplies mainly from China and India, the leaves can be used to produce black tea, oolong tea, white tea and green tea. Tea is made by adding boiling water to the tea leaves.

The different types of tea are created by different processing. When fully oxidised before drying the leaves become black teas, quick dried leaves that remain un oxidised produce the green teas and Oolongs or Wulongs as they are also known are formed somewhere in between the two processes. Oolong tea has less than half the caffeine of coffee.

Oolong has a great taste and offers a range of aromas depending on how long it was allowed to oxidise and where the tea was grown. They range from green style oolong such as Pouchong through to the fancy oolongs on to some that are nearly totally black tea.

Oolong has no bitter after taste and people soon become converts for life! The aroma is superb and usually stronger than that found in green or black teas. Several sub varieties of oolong, including those produced in the Wuyi Mountains of northern Fujian and in the central mountains of Taiwan, are among the most famous Chinese teas.

Oolong along with other teas  is rich in polyphenols (antioxidants). These are belived to be very good for the body and have been charted as helping prevent cancer and reducing the effects of aging. There is good evidence that drinking tea can help protect against heart disease, probably due to the same antioxidant chemicals, although other unknown mechanisms may also be important.
Oolong Tea, and other types are believed to be good for your teeth!

There have been studies done that show Oolong, green and black teas can help in weight loss. This is believed to be due to the tea raising the metabolic rate of the person drinking the tea for a few hours after.

Finding an Oolong tea stockist in the US or UK has proved hard, there are health food shops and specialist Chinese shops – Click here to find the easiest way to but Oolong tea.

OOolong Tea Leavesolong  also called Wulong, or Wu Long is literally ‘black dragon’ tea, but apparently the name originally had nothing to do with dragons but was named after its ‘inventor’ Wu Liang.
Wu Liang was distracted by a deer and forgot to dry out the tea he had harvested. When he remembered it a couple of days later, the leaves had started to oxidise and begun to change colour. He finished preparing it by firing it and Oolong was born!

I love Oolong and heartily recommend you try it, Click here a great range and reasonable prices.
